The number of scheduled direct flights to Finnish Lapland in the upcoming winter season has increased and visitors can fly to Lapland directly from 15 countries. Direct flight connections has been playing a important role in Lapland tourism.
International air traffic accounts for 3.7% of global emissions, and air traffic causes 40% of tourism emissions. However, arriving in Finland with low carbon is challenging. A comprehensive network of direct flights is considered important for this reason. A direct flight reduces the emissions of an individual air traveller, as its carbon dioxide emissions are lower than connecting flights, says analyst Susanne Heikkinen from Visit Finland, which is part of Business Finland.
According to the Business Finland, Developing and favoring low-carbon modes of transportation is key to supporting the sustainable growth of the tourism industry. Another important area of development is extending the stay of tourists. Last winter (November 2022 – February 2023), the length of stay of leisure trips in Finland increased compared to the winter before the pandemic. The relative share of 4-7 night trips increased in all the most important markets, and the share of 1-3 night trips decreased accordingly. –
The versatility of Lapland’s activities and services attracts longer stays and thus has a positive effect on the sustainable development of tourism, Heikkinen sums up. Also for the last summer season (summer-August 2023), the same phenomenon regarding the lengthening of the stay can be observed. The share of shorter trips among leisure travelers arriving by air has decreased, while the share of trips of around two weeks has increased when we look at the most important departure markets.
