Places To Visit in Kittilä

In Kittilä, everything evolves around nature and about how it is such an important part of life for the villages. Activities like hiking or cross-country skiing are really popular and Kittilä is known for a lot of tracks. Or going canoeing and fishing in the rivers, streams and lakes of the region is a popular activity.

With over 700 lakes, Kittilä is a well known destination for fishing. Kelontekemäjärvi is the biggest lake.

Ounasjoki river

The river is very important to the livelihood of the region. It functioned as a travel way in summertime, and used by skiing track in winter. The earliest reindeer herders, fishing and hunting inhabitants were feeling very secured by the river. The untouched river flows 300 km inside the borders of Finnish Lapland and is used as a waterway for log floating.

Sätkenä’s Bear Trail (3km)

A must do in Kittilä is Sätkenä, a research forest that was set to field trials related to environmental research. At the moment, the are is used for studies about reforestation and birch seed production. The birch was cultivated because in the late 19th century, a fire took place in the upper part of Sätkenävaara.

The trail is 3 km long and was opened in 1996.

Pahtakuru Kätkätunturilla (Gorge Pahtakuru)

Gorge Pahtakuru looks from a distance like an apline village, where you have a great view of Sirkka/Levi village. Along the Tuomikuruntie, you can discover the Kätkätunturi Fell and ending at the Lake of Immeljärvi. After this point,  you can start walking to Korkeaniemi camping site, that continues to Kätkä.

Fell Kumputunturi

581 meters above the sea level, you can find the peak of Kumputunturi. Around, you discover more than half of the old forests, covered with pine trees of over 200 years old. Most of the upper parts belong to law enforcement.

Joulupukin mökki (Santa Claus’ cabin)

The top spot at Levi was used for filming purposes, for example the movie Chirstmas Story. It is located at the top of Fell Levi. On top, you have a spendlid view and it shows the Finnish Construction Technology and how to build a good cabin.

Lapland Hotels Snowvillage

In Kittilä, you can discover a magical world of ice and snow. The snowvillage requires 350 000 kilos of crystal clear natural ice and around 20 million kilos of snow to make. Inside the snowvillage, you can find multiple ice sculptures, snow suites to spend the night, an ice restaurant and an ice bar. Every year, they make the Snowvillage under a different theme. The theme of 2021 is Macro World, and the aim is to make the visitors feel small when they pay a visit. You have the option to spend the night in one of the snow suites, where a sleeping bag and special blankets are provided to not get cold. Or enjoy a dinner in the magical ice restaurant. Snowvillage also has the option to celebrate your special wedding day to make your day even more unforgettable.

Kittilän Puurkirkko (Wooden Church)

Carl Ludvig Engel build between 1829-1831 the wooden church. The Baroque pulpit was donated by Laurila of Keminmaa in 1687, and the Aaltar painting was given by the Governor of the Province of Oulu in 1831.

Agnico Eagle Kultakaivos (Agnico Eagle Mine)

Pay a visit to the largest gold mine in Europe, a high quality and honest business of Agnico Eagle, the company’s first mine outside Canada. It operates from the Kittilä’s Gold Mine and carries out active mineral exploration in Finland and other countries. It produces jobs and invests in well-being of the communities and their inhabitants.

Levi’s Frisbee and Golf park

The frisbee playing is free, but with paying a small fee, you can use the gondola lift to get back your frisbee. Both tracks are in total 18 fairways and demanding. You can choose between red or black walls. The black takes you along the nature trail, while the red goes along the terrain.

The Golf is located directly at the Gondola Lift and is a family friendly track that is 9-lanes long.

Hiking and trekking

Hike to the highest point of the fell or experience a stay over in a open wilderness hut and create your own campfire. Choose from various paths and tracks and choose your own length of hike.

Examples:

  • Less than a mile-long Peak trail, goes around Levi’s peak
  • Ice Age Trail is 9 km long and goes around Levi to the treeline
  • Life of the Past Trail (around the entire fell)
  • Päiviö’s Path – The trail of the Great Shaman, explore the landscape of Ounasjoki river
  • Rykimäpolku, trhough Kätkätunturi to Levi Fell

Activity park

There is a Levi Activity Park located on the west site of the fell and opened during summer and autumn. It is one of the largest adventure parks of Northern Europe and suitable for adults as well as children. The park includes a wire slide marathon of 10 wire slides, the longest is over 100 metres.

There is a traffic and play park nearby, with a lot of pedal cards available for children under 12 year old. A playground can let you climb and hang upside down.

The 18-hole mini and frisbeegolf place is a place for your family or group of friends, where you can also try out the enchanting disc golf.

Culture and entertainment

You can enjoy a movie at Cinema Levi Summet and offers fresh movie experiences at the fell.

  • Einari Juntilla art museum: the earliest known artist from Kittilä, interpreter of Lapland’s nature
  • Palsa museum: Getsemane studio that has wall paintings by the artist on display
  • Särestöniemi museum: exhibitons of unique museum changes every year
  • Samiland: exhibitions outdoors and indoors, with European Union’s only indigenous people’s history and present
  • Sirpa Alalääkkölä: an artist who lived abroad for a long time, now presents her art and created great wall paintings.
