What to do in Summer in Lapland

Temperatures are raining, the grass and trees are green, and the sun is shining. Time to explore what summer means in Lapland! I promise you the activities below will not disappoint you.

1. Kayaking

One of the best ways to discover Finnish nature from a different perspective is with a kayak. It’s not only a lot of fun, but also an active way to discover Finland and all it has to offer.

Besides the water is also quite refreshing and on hot days you can take a splash in the water afterwards!

2. Rent a boat

You can’t only rent a kayak to explore Lapland from the water, but also one of the numerous boats that are to be found at the lake shores. It’s a lot of fun!

3. Swimming

Believe it or not, but Finland has a lot of beaches. There are loads of lakes and ponds with a good number of sandy edges to lay on and enjoy the sun and refreshing water. The water can be very cold, but it’s an experience itself to jump in it!

4. Rent water jet ski’s or go do one of the many other water sports

You’ll see them loads when strolling besides the river shores: Water Jet skis! It’s the summers equivalent to the snow mobiles here in Finland.  Besides water ski’s there are multiple other activities you can do on the water like stand-up paddle boarding and wakeboarding.

I love learning new things, I’m never really good at them, but I sure do love to try! SUP or stand up paddle boarding is not a talent of mine, but it is so much fun nonetheless. I promise you, you will be super proud of yourself when you finally are able to stand up on the board for a few minutes without falling off.

5.Midsummer night festival

Every summer in June there is the famous Midsummer Festival! All year round you hear everyone in Finland speak about it. Midsummer is quite the thing here up north! So I wouldn’t miss it if you have the chance!

Midsummer takes place on the Saturday between the 20th and the 16th of June.

6.Try Finnish ice cream

When it gets warmer, ice cream tastes even better. At least that’s my opinion! Finland has some very good ice cream. You can find ice cream stand in numerous places in Rovaniemi city! There is even one close to the water on your way from the centre to the Lapland university. You can take a stroll, lick your ice cream and watch the beautiful water reflecting it’s surroundings! All that close to the city centre!

7. Hiking

I personally love discovering Lappish nature while strolling trough it. There are so many National parks to discover all over Lapland. They look as beautiful as in winter and they are way easier to get to in summer. You can stay in an overnight cabin, make a campfire, and sing songs around it with your friends. Who doesn’t want that! My campfire nights are some of the most memorable ever! It’s simply amazing.

8. Road trip time

Making road trips is a lot easier without the snow! You don’t have to be afraid of slippery roads or snowstorms. Summer is ideal to drive around and discover all the different landscapes there are to find. You can drive all the way to Norway from Rovaniemi, Finland in no time! And… It never gets dark! Driving in the night just got a lot easier as well!

9. Horsebackriding

I am telling you… This will not dissapoint! Especially if you love animals and horses! Imagine breathing in the fresh air while birds sing in the background, hoofs tap on rocks, grass and moss… The sun slightly warms your skin while you look at the stunning landscapes that unfold in front of you. That is what it feels like, like you’re in fairytale land and snow white is ready to pop around the corner at every moment with her seven dworfs.
