Winter and dark time speed limits In Finnish Lapland

Winter and dark time speed limits will be introduced in Lapland from Thursday, October 20. The speed limit signs will be  changed during Thursday and Friday. According to the regional Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment,  winter driving restrictions come into effect as soon as the signs are changed.

By lowering speed limits, traffic safety is improved during the season when the weather conditions vary and the risk of accidents increases. Lapland’s ELY Center reminds that the speed limit sign only indicates the maximum permitted vehicle speed. However, the speed should always be adjusted according to the condition of the road, weather, visibility and other traffic conditions. Reindeer crashes can also be better avoided by reducing the speed. There will be no changes to the previous winter speed limits in Lapland. Kemi-Tornio motorway the maximum permitted speed limit of 120 kilometers per hour will be reduced to 100 kilometers per hour. The speed limit of 100 kilometers per hour on the highway in Kemi is also valid in the winter season. In addition, the one-hundred-kilometer limit will remain on part of Lapland’s highways 4, 5, 21 and 29 and on part of trunk roads 79 and 82.

The summer speed limits will be switched to during March/April (2023).
