Attractions in Ylitorno
In Ylitornio’s nature, there is plenty to admire. Aavasaksa, a 242-meter-high hill located 10 kilometers north of the municipal center, is one of Finland’s 27 recognized national landscapes. There is a café-restaurant, a ski resort, and accommodation services in Aavasaksa. The Torniojoki River and rugged hillside dominate the landscape. Aside from the scenery, the area has manu museums and is rich in culture and history.
Aavasaksa
Avasaksa is a 242 meters high hill, from where you have a beautiful view all around the area. Also Northern Lights can be catched from up there. On top there is the oldest tourism related building in Lapland, a nice restaurant and a view tower.

Kohkola Homestead & Niuro Homestead
Kohkola Homestead & Niro Homestead are two houses which have not been destroyed during the second world war. Both of them were restored, but still kept as original as possible.
Keisarinmaja
Keisarinmaja is the oldest tourism based building in Lapland. It is located almost on top of Aavasaksa hill and was used to give refreshments to travellers and as a shelter for bad weather.
Next to it is now a viewing tower on which you can see the wide landscape of Aavasaksa sourroundings.

Ylitornio Church
The church is located in the centre of Ylitornio and was finished in 1940. Definetly worth a short visit.
Maupertuis Monument & Annikki Kariniemi Statue
Annikki Kariniemi Statue and Maupertuis Monument can both be found on Aavasaksa hill, where also the Keisarinmaja is.
Väinö Kataja Statue
The statue can be found in the center of Ylitorino and was placed to honour the author Väinö Kataja from Ylitornio.

Esa Helaakoski works with Finnhorses in the forest or for events. He provides also Finnhorses programms like riding, horse-logging courses or other interessting things.
