My top five useful items to bring for your outdoor adventures in Lapland

Lapland is plentiful with outdoor activities, some of which you can bring your own equipment for. My top five useful items that I wouldn’t go without, whatever the season are a knife, hand warmer pouches, matches, comfortable boots and a flask.

Top five useful items to bring in Lapland

KNIFE

A knife is a multifunctional item and could be a foldable Swiss Army knife or a fixed knife with a more comfortable handle. Both have their pros and cons but in summary, a fixed knife is stronger and easy to clean and a foldable knife is more convenient to carry, being easier to store in your backpack.

HAND WARMERS

These have saved me on really cold days where the temperature drops below -30°c and you’re out all day on the move and not able to stop to make a fire. These are disposable pouches that you can put in your gloves or socks which last up to 10 hours (they actually work!). If you want a more eco-friendly alternative there are rechargeable warmers and some that use lighter fuel.

MATCHES

A small box of matches comes in handy for fire making, if you stop in a kota sometimes other people might have left matches but it is always better to be prepared!

COMFORTABLE SHOES

There is nothing worse than having bad shoes, it can ruin a whole experience. A pair of waterproof boots that are worn in and can fit thick wool socks under are ideal.

FLASK

Drinking hot coffee out of a flask tastes like absolute heaven when you take a break out in the middle of nowhere. Metal is good as it’s really easy to clean, I have a bottle by the brand S’well which has handled freezing temperatures.

There is one extra item to bring – a plastic bag for your rubbish. If you are venturing far into the wilderness for the day and plan to cook, you won’t find a bin. Having a rubbish bag makes it easier to tidy up after yourself.

ITEMS YOU CAN RENT IN LAPLAND

There are items of larger equipment you could bring depending on your mode of travel to Lapland. These items are possible to rent if you can’t transport them easily:

– Alpine skis/snowboard

– Cross country skis

– Touring skis

– Snowshoes

– Fat bike

– Toboggan

– fishing gear

Lapland offers ski slopes and cross country trails and ski touring is an option for more experienced skiers. You can rent touring skis, skins and avalanche gear in most resorts. If skiing is not your sport, venture into the forest on foot with snowshoes, ride dedicated fat bike trails, release your inner child while tobogganing or drop your line beneath the ice and fish for the day. There is an activity for everyone in Lapland and renting equipment is easily accessible, as is finding a guide if you don’t want to try activities alone for the first time.
